Research
AL Elevation is committed to supporting high-quality research that informs education policy and improves outcomes for children and young people, particularly those facing disadvantage.

We work in partnership with leading organisations, including the Education Policy Institute, to fund independent research exploring the factors that shape educational opportunity, attainment and long-term life chances.

Our commissioned research focuses on addressing inequalities within the education system and identifying practical, evidence-based solutions that can support more equitable outcomes.
Extra-Curricular Participation

This research looks at which pupils access extra-curricular activities during secondary school, and how participation is associated with later outcomes.

Key findings include:

  • Participation in extra-curricular activities is associated with a range of positive outcomes in early adulthood

  • Access is uneven, with disadvantaged pupils less likely to take part

  • Differences also exist by prior attainment and pupil characteristics

These findings highlight the importance of ensuring that all pupils have access to high-quality extra-curricular opportunities.

Length of the School Day
DHS_0523_42.jpg

This review examines how much time pupils in England spend in school and considers the potential effects of extending the school day.

The evidence suggests:

  • Additional time may have benefits, particularly when used for enrichment or targeted support

  • The quality and structure of this time is critical

  • Any extension would require careful planning and appropriate resourcing

Extending the school day is not a standalone solution, but one part of a wider approach to improving outcomes.
